<NEW> Meeting with our NRZs
Last Wednesday, I was honored to be introduced to the leaders of our Hartford Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ) community empowerment groups. Hartford Next, the coalition of all thirteen of Hartford’s Neighborhood Revitalization Zones (NRZ’s) and the City of Hartford, scheduled a special meeting that allowed me to spend time sharing ideas with representatives from each group. Special thanks to our Strategic Partnership and Fund Development team for hosting this important introductory meeting with Hartford citizens who are key to understanding each of our unique neighborhoods, and supporting improvements in our shared community. <NEW> Annual Health & Wellness Fair - Milner Middle School this Saturday, 10/4
Tomorrow, Saturday, October 4, join the City of Hartford and Charter Oak Health Center for the 15th Annual Ollie M. Williams Community Health and Wellness Fair. The fair, at Milner Middle School, located at 150 Tower Avenue, runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Students, families, and community members can connect with local health services and learn about risk factors, preventative care, and treatment options. There will be information sessions and health checks, including cancer screenings, blood pressure screenings, and more!
<NEW> Hispanic Heritage Month with the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center
I was so happy to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center at their annual Open House on Tuesday at Central Connecticut State University’s Elihu Burritt Library, where we enjoyed delicious Latin American cuisine and a special live performance by the salsa band Orquesta la Yunqueña! From marching in parades, to pep rallies, to door decorating contests, our students and staff are engaging in Hispanic Heritage Month activities and lessons that highlight Hispanic cultural contributions in our classrooms, schools, and our city. At HPS, we teach our students to deeply understand the importance, beauty, and power of diversity. On Wednesday, Dwight Bellizzi Dual Language Academy held its door-decorating contest judging; and today Breakthrough Magnet School - South hosted their annual, lively whole school assembly for Hispanic Heritage Month!

This Sunday, October 5, is World Teachers’ Day. This year’s theme is "Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession," as announced by UNESCO, emphasizing how important it is for teachers and education systems to work together more closely. The goal is to boost professionalism, well-being, and provide great education opportunities everywhere. I am grateful for the extraordinary work our educators do every day. I am proud to work in a district where our educators are dedicated to creating positive, supportive learning environments that empower all students to reach their full potential.

Parents, guardians and seniors (12th graders) will experience an evening packed with valuable resources and information about FAFSA & Scholarships, Hartford Promise updates, the college application process, and workforce & military options – Students and families are encouraged to explore all the pathways available after high school!

< NEW> My First 100 Days
Today was my 61st day of learning, listening, and sharing ideas with our HPS community. This week, it was about Community: I was able to visit with members of the Connecticut Family School Partnership (CFSP) at the 2025 Family & Community Engagement Conference; the Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Center community; our 13 Neighborhood Revitalization Zone group leaders; COMPASS Youth Collaborative, and, at the 2nd Annual ReadyCT Summit, students and staff from Hartford Public High School, East Hartford High School, Norwich Free Academy, and New Britain High School—each enrolled in ReadyCT’s allied health pathway. I look forward to deeper engagement with our schools and administration to better understand our challenges, and to the start of my RUSH Tour - Reading to Uplift Students of Hartford, during which I will visit with all our students over the course of the school year in support of literacy.

El miércoles pasado, tuve el honor de ser presentado a los líderes de nuestros grupos de capacitación comunitaria de las Zonas de Revitalización de Vecindarios (NRZ, por sus siglas en inglés) de Hartford. Hartford Next, la coalición de todas las trece Zonas de Revitalización de Vecindarios (NRZ) de Hartford y la Municipalidad de Hartford, programaron una reunión especial que me permitió dedicar tiempo a compartir ideas con los representantes de cada grupo. <NUEVO> Feria Anual de Salud y Bienestar - Escuela Intermedia Milner, este sábado, 10/4
Mañana, sábado, 4 de octubre, únase a la Municipalidad de Hartford y al Centro de Salud Charter Oak para la 15.ª Feria Anual de Salud y Bienestar de la Comunidad Ollie M. Williams. La feria que se celebrará en la Escuela Intermedia Milner, ubicada en 150 Tower Avenue, estará abierta de 10:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m. Los estudiantes, familias y miembros de la comunidad pueden ponerse en contacto con los servicios locales de salud y aprender sobre los factores de riesgo, el cuidado preventivo y las opciones de tratamiento. Habrá sesiones informativas y revisiones médicas, incluso detecciones de cáncer, detecciones de tensión arterial y mucho más.
<NUEVO> Mes de la Herencia Hispana con el Centro Latinoamericano, Latino y Caribeño
¡Me alegré mucho de celebrar el 30. ° aniversario del Centro Latinoamericano, Latino y Caribeño en su Jornada de puertas abiertas anual, el martes, en la Biblioteca Elihu Burritt de la Universidad Estatal de Connecticut, donde disfrutamos de deliciosa comida latinoamericana y de una presentación en vivo de la banda de salsa Orquesta la Yunqueña! Desde desfiles hasta mítines de animación y concursos de decoración de puertas, nuestros estudiantes y personal están participando en actividades y lecciones del Mes de la Herencia Hispana que destacan las contribuciones culturales hispanas en nuestras aulas, nuestras escuelas y nuestra ciudad. En las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford (HPS, por sus siglas en inglés), le enseñamos a nuestros estudiantes a entender a profundidad la importancia, belleza y poder de la diversidad. El miércoles, la Academia Dwight Bellizzi Dual Language celebró su concurso de decoración de puertas; y hoy, la Escuela Técnico/Artística Breakthrough - South organizó su animada asamblea escolar anual con motivo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

<NUEVO> ¡Celebración del Día Mundial del Docente!
Este domingo, 5 de octubre, es el Día Mundial del Docente. El tema de este año es «Reformular la enseñanza como una profesión colaborativa», tal y como lo ha anunciado la UNESCO, destacando la importancia de que los docentes y los sistemas educativos trabajen juntos de forma más cercana. La meta es impulsar el profesionalismo, el bienestar y ofrecer excelentes oportunidades educativas en todas partes. Me siento agradecido por el extraordinario trabajo que nuestros educadores hacen cada día. Me enorgullece mucho trabajar en un distrito en el que nuestros educadores se dedican a crear entornos de aprendizaje positivos y propicios que permitan a todos los estudiantes alcanzar su pleno potencial.

Familias de las HPS de la Promoción 2026: No se pierdan nuestra Feria Post-secundaria para las Familias de las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford, que se celebrará este lunes 6 de octubre, de 5:30 p. m. a 7:00 p. m., en la Escuela Secundaria Pública de Hartford, ubicada en 55 Forest Street, Hartford. Los padres, tutores y estudiantes del último año (del 12.° grado) vivirán una noche llena de valiosos recursos e información sobre la Solicitud gratuita de ayuda federal para estudiantes (FAFSA, por sus siglas en inglés) y las becas, actualizaciones de Hartford Promise, el proceso de solicitud de ingreso a la universidad y las opciones laborales y militares. ¡Se anima a los estudiantes y sus familias a explorar todas las opciones disponibles después de la escuela secundaria!
